Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
by Fusion 45

Fusion 45 Presents Paste Magazine’s Album of The Decade #19

Amy Winehouse’s platinum-selling debut, Frank, released in 2003, when she was just twenty years old, certainly served notice of a considerable vocal talent with a gift for clever songwriting. But nothing could have prepared me for the retro masterpiece she’d follow it up with. I was able to get my hands on Back to Black after it was released in the U.K. in October, and I’ve been listening to it ever since. The album is heavily influenced by ’60s girl groups like the Shangri-Las, and that sound is updated with a hip-hop sensibility courtesy of producers Mark Ronson (Christina Aguilera) and Salaam Remi (Nas, Fugees). But make no mistake: Winehouse is the star here. Her whiskey-soaked voice (when she’s talking about rehab, she ain’t kidding) gives every track a classic feel, and the album contains remarkably insightful lyrics on love, life and relationships. In R and B’s current state, Back to Black is even more important.

The album starts strong with the album’s first single, “Rehab,” before moving right into the big drums and barroom tale of “You Know I’m No Good,” a version of which turned up on Ghostface’s More Fish (somehow, I don’t even really miss the charismatic emcee here). “Me and Mr. Jones,” rumored to be a fictitious gripe directed at Nasir Jones, let’s you know right away you’re not in Motown with the line, “What kind of fuckery is this?/ You made me miss the Slick Rick gig.” It’s this kind of playful inventiveness that makes this album more than just a tribute to sounds past. Nowhere is that more apparent than on “Addicted,” an ode to Winehouse’s greenery vice and a warning to thieving boyfriends. This could pass for a Supremes anthem until you stumble across a line like this: “It’s got me addicted/ Does more than any dick did.”

Song titles like “Back to Black,” “Love Is a Losing Game,” “Tears Dry on Their Own” and “Wake up Alone” should give you an idea of where Winehouse is coming from. The album follows a similar jilted-lover story line to that of Mark Ronson’s other collaborator and U.K. sensation, Lily Allen. “He Can Only Hold Her” uses the same Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions musical base as John Legend’s “Slow Dance,” but to much better advantage. (Legend is undeniably talented, but Back to Black takes all the musical cues and themes he hinted at on Once Again and does them better.)

These days it seems R&B’s brightest stars have either disappeared (Erykah Badu), gone crazy (Lauryn Hill) or both (D’Angelo). At the same time, a wholly original, fully finished album from Bilal is put on a shelf and another one from Musiq Soulchild is right around the corner. Meanwhile, calendar girls like Ciara and Rihanna are being passed off as singers. But Back to Black stands in testament to the fact that talent and originality still exist-and can still create buzz. Last month, both of Winehouse’s shows at New York City’s Joe’s Pub sold out (scalpers were reportedly getting as much as $250 per), and the audience included Jay-Z and Mos Def. Winehouse already won the Brit Award for best British female solo artist (and garnered three other nominations), and Back to Black should wind up at the top of many best-of lists this year. Let’s just hope her shaky personal habits leave her in good enough shape to enjoy the praise that’s sure to come. (Bryan Whitefield, PreFix Magazine;, March 2007)

Kanye West - The College Dropout
by Fusion 45

Fusion 45 Presents Paste Magazine’s Album of The Decade #17

What is the fuss about his contradictions? The main difference between him and most hip hop journalists is his money. They’d buy the Benz—so would I, Volvos don’t last as long—and probably the gold too. They’d say anything to get laid. They accept the economic rationale of dealing and dig music of dubious moral value. Yet at the same time they do their bit for racial righteousness and know full well how much they need the “single black female addicted to retail.” On Easter Sunday, some of them even believe in Jesus Christ. But none of them are as clever or as funny as Kanye West, and these days I’m not so sure about Eminem either. West came up as a beatmaster, but his Alicia Keys and Talib Kweli hits are pretty bland, and neither his voice nor his flow could lead anyone into sin. So he’d better conceptualize, and he does. Not only does he create a unique role model, that role model is dangerous—his arguments against education are as market-targeted as other rappers’ arguments for thug life. Don’t do what he says, kids, and don’t do what he does, because you can’t. Just stay in school. Really. I mean it. (Robert Christgau, The Village Voice, March 9, 2004)

Listen Up! Best Music of the Millennium … So Far
by Wired: Underwire

previous image | next image

In a decade fueled by hyperconsumption and paranoia, some musicians stood out by balancing cultural relevance, technological innovation and raw lyrical and sonic power.

These artists and their recordings — the best of the millennium so far — significantly upped the ante in their respective genres of rock, pop, hip-hop and beyond (usually by obliterating those labels). These musicians’ beautiful noise will only grow louder as the next decade unfurls.

Listen to top tracks by the standard-bearers below, then let us know your choices for the ’00s finest music in the comments section.

El-P: Fantastic Damage (2002), I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead (2007)

It’s apropos that El-P is pictured above in front of what looks like a lie detector, because he’s rock and hip-hop’s eminent truth-teller. His apocalyptic twin missiles Fantastic Damage and I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead may have flown beneath hip-hop’s hopelessly distracted mainstream, but that’s only because their personal and political pain was too much to bear for hearts and minds that sold their souls to the twin hallucinations of reality TV and the war on terror.

Songs on both efforts mashed the political and cultural madness of the decade with sci-fi standouts like Star Trek, THX-1138 and Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer (in “Deep Space 9mm” at right). El-P’s labyrinthine rhymes were backed by beats fed through two Technics, an Ensoniq sampling keyboard, one Vestax mixer, a Korg Chaoss Pad and more comparatively lo-fi recording tech.

His profile escalated sharply on I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, in the form of a kinetic beat upgrade and cameos from Trent Reznor (in “Flyentology” at right), Cat Power and other all-stars. But even that abrasive classic unsettled more soma-sniffing hip-hop heads than it awakened upon its release in 2007.

“I’m more interested in saying something that will mean something,” the former Company Flow member told Wired.com. The group’s stunning debut Funcrusher Plus was reissued earlier this year. “My solo work made sense of the inevitable Third World War. Which is why I ended up bringing more of who I was into the picture, and became more influenced by matters of the heart and head.”

In the end, it was El-P’s decision to abandon the music industry and form the respected indie label Definitive Jux in 1999, setting the stage for his brilliant bow as the finest hip-hop artist of the ’00s. From its slew of releases from intelligent, talented hip-hop artists like RJD2, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif and Rob Sonic to team-ups with television tastemakers like Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, Def Jux turned out some of the most potent artistic work of the ’00s.

Through it all, El-P churned out the best hip-hop of our still-new millennium, and raised the stakes for electronic music speaking truth to power and paranoia. Tell a friend.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz were caught celebrating the album release for "The Element of Freedom" in NY. It's actually the same day that they were photographed doing some Christmas shopping over in West Village. The album release party was held at club M2 and Swizzy looks like he had a great time supporting his boo! Check out the footage below:

AJ, formerly of 106 & Park, was the host for the evening and Funk Master Flex was on the 1's and 2's!! Everyone seemed to have a good time except for those bodyguards. Those guys were really on their job!!

MTV has been releasing footage of Lil Wayne and his new project called "The Nino Brown Story". I don't know if I would consider Lil Wayne any type of Nino Brown but he's definitely a force to be reckoned with in this music industry. Nevertheless, Lil Wayne is very entertaining to watch and we all know by now his work ethic is off the chain. Jay-Z, Alicia Keys Close VMAs With Ode To New York
by ThisizGame

There's fashionably late and then there's Jay-Z late.

The Brooklyn rapper arrived to the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in a limousine, casually pulling up to Radio City Music Hall around 11 p.m.

Hov was scheduled to close out the show with a performance, and he knocked it out of the park like A-Rod. Wearing his trademark Yankee cap, Jay-Z was joined by fellow New Yorker Alicia Keys to perform the rapper's ode to the Big Apple, "Empire State of Mind." Images of the Bronx Bombers' stadium flashed behind Jay-Z as he rapped.

"Yeah, I'm up at Brooklyn, now I'm down in Tribeca," he spit. "Right next to De Niro, but I'll be 'hood forever/ I'm the new Sinatra and since I made it here/ I can make it anywhere, yeah, they love me everywhere."

Keys belted out the number from behind her piano as images of Manhattan flashed across the instrument.

"In New York/ Concrete jungles where dreams are made of/ There's nothing you can't do," Keys sang. "Now you're in New York/ These streets will make you feel brand new/ The lights will inspire you/ Let's here it for New York, New York, New York."

The performance was the first time the two superstars joined forces publicly for "Empire State of Mind," a track from Jay-Z's recently released The Blueprint 3.

Jay-Z performed the song on Friday night during his September 11 tribute show, Answer the Call, at Madison Square Garden.

But in a night of memorable unplanned moments, including Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech to protest in favor of Beyoncé, Lil Mama joined the list of unexpected attendees.

As Jay-Z and Keys brought the song to a close, the "Lip Gloss" rapper and "America's Best Dance Crew" judge joined them onstage. The Brooklyn native's appearance was unscheduled, but she inserted herself among the music titans as if it were planned. As the legendary rapper and singer posed, Lil Mama did her best B-girl stance beside them.

"DJ Hero" Maker On DJ AM's Passing, "We Are Deeply Saddened By The Loss"
by ThisizGame

Activision, the maker behind Jay-Z's upcoming DJ Hero video game, has released a statement on the passing of the game's contributor, Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein, and said the late deejay's work would still be featured in the project.

In addition to speaking on his passing, the company also said his final work was vital to the game.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of DJ AM, who was a tremendous talent, a trusted partner and friend to DJ Hero," a statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family. AM was instrumental in the making of DJ Hero and we hope that his work on the game will be a fitting tribute to his creative spirit and musical talent." (Woooha)

In addition to featuring contributions from DJ AM, the video game will also help fans step in to the shoes of a hip-hop deejay.

The makers of Guitar Hero introduce a new way to experience your favorite music. With DJ Hero you will be the life of the party as you scratch and mix more than 100 songs into over 90 unique mixes. Learn basic and advanced DJ Hero techniques, then spin your way through different set lists in beginner, easy, medium, hard, and expert modes. Grab your friends and start your own DJ Hero party. (Gaming Age)

Eminem previously spoke on the "fun" aspect behind the upcoming release.

"I think there's a lot of kids who listen to hip-hop [and] buy video games," Em said in an interview. "A lot of the same audience. It gives the kids a chance to, kinda, get their feet wet with the deejaying experience. Obviously it's a video game so it's not the actual thing, but, it can give you a feel for what it's kinda like for kids or whatever...If this game would have came out back when I was a kid, I would have went to Target and stole it along with my pink 'Alf' shirt...I think that this is kinda a way for kids, you know with Guitar Hero it's like challenging them to be able to play the songs and this is kinda challenging the kids to become a deejay." (YouTube)

DJ AM's memorial will take place tomorrow (September 3) evening in California.

A celebratory memorial will be held for Goldstein Thursday night at the Hollywood Palladium, which last October was the site of DJ AM's first performance following the plane crash that he and Travis Barker survived. "The format of the evening will be in the style of an open 12-step meeting. Adam's friends both from his life in recovery, as well as those from other areas of his life are welcome. We ask only that everyone adhere to the tradition of anonymity and let what they hear there, and who they see there, stay there." (E! Online)

Battle Over Tupac Movie Heading To Trial
by ThisizGame

The battle between Afeni Shakur’s Amaru Entertainment and film company Morgan Creek Productions rages on over the making of a bio-pic about rapper Tupac Shakur.

The two companies are locked in litigation over a movie on the life of Tupac Shakur. In a lawsuit filed last February, Morgan Creek accused Amaru of breaching a contract to produce a movie about Shakur, who was gunned down on the Las Vegas strip in September of 1996.

Amaru filed a cross-complaint against Morgan Creek, claiming the production company interfered with other potential deals for the movie.

Lawyers claim that Morgan Creek attempted to block other interested film companies from being involved in the film, by claiming to have exclusive rights to produce the untitled flick.

"We are pleased with the court's ruling yesterday morning. It supports our claim that Morgan Creek tortiously interfered with the making of the Tupac Shakur movie,” said Skip Miller of Miller Barondess, LLP in Los Angeles, attorney for Amaru Entertainment. “I look forward to trying this case and have the jury decide the matter. Morgan Creek has a history of bullying people into giving them rights they did not acquire. This time, they picked on the wrong people."

A trial date has now been set for Tuesday, April 13, 2010.

by ThisizGame

Ja Rule, Styles P, N.O.R.E. and more have shared their shocked and surprised Twitter reactions to Chris Brown's first public television interview on "Larry King Live" since his domestic dispute with Rihanna earlier this year.

Ja Rule, who has been known to collaborate with various R&B singers including Lloyd and Ashanti, commented on Brown's appearance.

"Why is this n*gga chris brown wearing a powder blue bow tie...," he wrote Wednesday (September 2) night. "I like that his moms is there... Shout to all my strong women!!!" (Ja Rule's Twitter)

D-Block's Styles P took aim at the questions Larry King presented Brown.

"We have to be like 10 yards away from each other," he says. "When I look at it now, it's just like, wow, like, I can't -- I can't believe that -- that actually happened. On his sentencing, Brown says that "everything comes with consequences. They want me to pick up trash remove graffiti...I'm a hard worker. It's something I'm willing to do." Chris also talks about his life with his abusive father. "I used to be scared to go to bed," he recalls. "Nobody taught us how to love one another. Nobody taught us a book on how to how to control our emotions or our anger...I wish I could have changed that night." "I just need to prove to people I can be a role model," Brown says. "That's not who I am as a person, and that's not who I promise I want to be." Chris says he misses Rihanna and admits he's not sure how to deal with her dating other guys. "I definitely would be affected by it, but, at the end of the day, I mean, we're not together, so, if she's happy, I'm cool...We'll always be friends." (CNN)

Janet Jackson Writing Tell-All Book
by Hip-Hop Crunch

Janet Jackson is writing an explosive tell-all about her world-famous family following the death of her older brother Michael.

“She is going to talk about Michael’s death and how it’s affected her and his children and the rest of the family,” a publishing industry insider close to Janet’s book deal reveals in the Aug. 31 issue of In Touch Weekly.

“A lot of it will focus on her battle with self-esteem and weight. She’s a huge success,” a friend adds. “But that’s not always what she has seen when she looks in the mirror, so the book will talk about how she has coped, and about her family relationships. She wants to help other young women out there.”

Janet’s book is expected early next year.

NATALIE PORTMAN AND MILA KUNIS HAVE ANGRY BALLERINA SEX IN 'BLACK SWAN'

It was announced recently that Mila Kunis would be joining Natalie Portman in Darren Arofonsky's upcoming ballet thriller Black Swan. Now it's being reported that she'll really be 'joining' her if you catch my drift. I'm talking about sex you guys.

A script review from Script Shadow states:

[I]n this movie, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis have sex…And not just nice sweet innocent sex either. We’re talking ecstasy-induced hungry aggressive angry sex.

Well, that sounds nice and I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here. But this is starting to sound more and more like a direct-to-DVD Heather Graham movie. (Latino Review)

Rihanna Is Ms. New Booty…
by Necole Bitchie.com

Rihanna was spotted outside a Beverly Hills office building late yesterday afternoon and the paparazzi seemed very interested in what was in the back of them jeans.  Can we say Ms. New booty? She’s been out in LA recording since late last week and ironically Chris Brown is out in LA recording as well. According to X17online, the two are are still creeping despite court orders:

Sources tell X17Online exclusively, that Rihanna was at the Sofitel Hotel in West Hollywood the other day, taking a break from a recording session at a nearby studio. Around 6pm, Chris showed up and we are not sure if the two got drinks or booked a room but they are definitely up to something! Chris has no reason to be at the hotel so we hope these two aren’t being sneaky about rekindling their romance.

blah blah blah! We’ve heard this story before. It’s not hard to believe that Chris is in LA helping her turn that flatty into a phatty….
